My, my, there’s nothing as unpredictable as the weather, is there? Madge and I thought that it was time we headed back to England for a visit with our brother so, we winterized the RV, parked her up, and flew to Devon for a lovely, mild and green December. Not! A foot of snow, minus 15 degrees temps, burst pipes and cut off villages. Well, let me tell you, we were THRILLED to get back to balmy Vancouver Island in January.
Have you experienced that lift of the heart that occurs when you are coming in for a landing after being far away? Looking out that little airplane window and seeing “home” is a wonderful feeling. What are not so wonderful are the incredible challenges with air travel these days. My, oh, my, what a fuss! An hour circling the airport in the car, an hour at the self-serve check-in kiosks, an hour going through security, all with the backdrop of employee faces that reflect the frustration and disagreeableness experienced daily by travellers – it’s very discouraging. It used to be so glamorous, didn’t it? A cocktail in the Airport lounge, pre-flight. A short stroll to your departure gate where you were greeted with smiles and warmth. Real cutlery, glasses and place settings with your hot meal (which was included in your fare, imagine that!). Well, I’ve gone on enough, I must get to my point which is, arriving on the Island and reconnecting with our RV provided the same feeling of “we’re HOME”, as that airplane landing did.
Many of you have had the RV snowbird experience this winter. Enjoying your RV year-round is something that many of us aspire to. Yes, we can do that here on the Island or, being mobile, we can choose to experience other countries and climates from the comfort of our “home”. To those of you returning to Vancouver Island this month – welcome back! To those of you who usually stay put and enjoy Canada’s mildest winters here on the Island, aren’t we incredibly lucky? Finally, to those who, like us, took to the skies over the winter - my sympathies.
I’m already seeing signs of eager anticipation everywhere. RV’s being uncovered, washed, de-winterized. Camping brochures and RV’ing magazines being pored over by seasonal campers who can’t wait for that first trip of the year. Our grandchildren have friends who have never been RVing – can you imagine! Their parents have asked us what it’s like and, we always say, speak as you find. Throughout our summer travels, we are surrounded by families who are connecting in ways they can’t at home. With all distractions removed, parents and children can enjoy each other. No schedules, no pressure. Our suggestion to these RVless parents is – try it for yourself! Why not rent an RV for a week or two this summer? You may find it’s not for you but, I’ll bet you a slap-up roast dinner that you will be hooked! Arbutus RV even has a ‘Try Before You Buy’ rental fee rebate program in effect so, what have you got to lose? I’ll tell you what, you’ll lose that frown line, those tense shoulders, that constant feeling of work going unfinished. I can’t even begin to list all the things you’ll gain.
Well, that’s enough from me. I must turn my attention to our plans for the coming months. It’s a time of the year that I relish. I just love the planning stage. All of those amazing places, both familiar and as yet undiscovered, just waiting for Madge and I to explore.
Cherish that RV and the memories it provides, TTFN my faithful readers…
